HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team takes to the road this weekend to face Texas State in a Sun Belt West Division matchup at San Marcos, Texas.
Game time is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, and can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com.
The Golden Eagles (1-8 overall, 0-5 Sun Belt) look to snap a current seven-game losing streak in the meeting with the Bobcats (5-4, 3-2).
This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools with all four wins coming from the visiting school, and the series tied at 2-2.
The Bobcats captured the first meeting which came during the 2013 season opener, 22-15, in the initial game for then Golden Eagle coach Todd Monken. A Tyler Arndt 17-yard run proved the difference in the game as he scored with 2:54 left. Southern Miss had gone ahead, 15-14, on a Corey Acosta 36-yard field goal with 5:43 remaining.
The two teams played again in San Marcos in 2015, and Jalen Richard rushed for a career-best 230 yards with four touchdown runs, including from 54 and 63 yards, in a 56-50 win. The total 106 points tied for the most-ever combined points in a Southern Miss football game. The other was a 56-50 loss to Tulsa in 2010.
In the first meeting as Sun Belt foes in 2022, Zach Wilcke hit Chandler Pittman on a 53-yard pass with 32 seconds left which proved to be the game winner. Last year's game featured Bobcat Ismail Mahdi returning the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and adding three rushing touchdowns as the Bobcats fought off a late Golden Eagle rally that included 26 consecutive points to win 50-36.
Heading into this week's game, interim head coach Reed Stringer was pleased with the way the younger players were doing when they got a chance late in the game in the team's loss last weekend at home against Marshall.
"I enjoyed watching the young players in the last ten minutes making plays on both sides of the ball," said Stringer. "It's really encouraging because right now, the biggest thing is what the future of this program is going to look like. That's what I am trying to hold together and develop, and hopefully we can win a game or two at the end of the year for these seniors and our guys. I am excited about our future and to keep developing these guys and keep pushing."
Eight-four different players have gotten an opportunity to play for the Golden Eagles this season, including 37 who have made starts. A total of 22 players have made their starts as Southern Miss players this fall.
Southern Miss also has two players on its roster from the state of Texas, including Braxton Myers (Coppell) and Kyirin Heath (Mansfield).
