Southern Miss Closes Battle4Atlantis with Loss to Texas A&M
11/25/2024 9:48:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PARADISE ISLAND, The Bahamas – Southern Miss led throughout the first quarter against the Aggies of Texas A&M and scored the first five points of the second quarter to tie the game early on. Texas A&M used a timeout to kick off a run of their own and outscored the Lady Eagles 27-8 to lead by 19 going into the half. A&M hung on for the rest of the game, winning 79-57 over the Lady Eagles in the final game of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle4Atlantis.
Southern Miss (2-5) drops its fourth game in-a-row in another hard-fought loss not reflected in the box score. The Lady Eagles, for their part, have seen internal growth in the Battle4Atlantis and look to take that growth into the rest of the season.
"I hate that we weren't able to get a win down here," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis, "but I am happy with the way came together as a group here. We still have a lot of growing to do to be competitive in our league, but this tournament was a great step in that direction. I knew coming down here that we may be over matched by a lot of these programs just based on resources alone, but I can't help but think we did a great job adjusting to their strengths and getting some valuable experience."
Tonight's game was more of the same. Lady Eagle newcomers shined as Bre Sutton (New Orleans, La.) and Je'Mya Evans (Gulfport, Miss.) each finished with double-figure scoring outputs. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) led the Lady Eagles with 14 points on a 5-of-8 day on the floor, but her most impressive mark came behind the three-point line.
Grayson's first three cut into an early A&M lead in the first while Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) hit a fast break bucket to tie the score 9-9. Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) gave Southern Miss the lead at the under-five timeout, 11-9, but a Texas A&M triple gave the lead back to the Aggies. The Lady Eagles did not retake the lead for the rest of the game.
The closest they got was one minute into the second quarter after a Sutton three-point basket and Mikaylah Manley (Lake Charles, La.) jumper tied the game 19-19. Texas A&M called a timeout and used a run to lead 46-27 at the half.
TAMU led by as many as 28, but Southern Miss kept the margin down at times. All of Evans' 10 points came in the second half as she shot 4-of-9 from the floor in the final two quarters.
Grayson, who had just two career attempts from beyond the arc in 112 prior games, sank the first three-point basket of her career at the 6:34 mark in the first quarter. She hit another three later on in the third and finished 2-of-2 from beyond the arc to reach her 14-point final.
On the Texas A&M side, Jada Malone made her first start of the season a memorable one, scoring a career-high 26 points on an 11-of-12 shooting performance. She was one of four Aggies to score double figures on the day in their 79-57 win.

The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season.
