BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nyla Jean scored a career-high 24 points as the Lady Eagles fell to UAB 87-66 inside Bartow Arena in Birmingham. Jean finished 8-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to lead all scorers on the day as UAB took the 71st meeting between the two programs.
Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) found the basket just 13 seconds after the opening tip to give Southern Miss (2-6) the first points of the day. Jean scored Southern Miss' first four points of the day en route to her 24-point, career-best performance.
Southern Miss retook its first quarter lead thanks to a 2-of-2 showing at the free throw line by Bre Sutton (New Orleans, La.) and added to it on its next possession thanks to a three-point basket from Jean, giving the Lady Eagles their largest lead of the game.
UAB (5-2) responded with back-to-back-to-back three-point baskets to swing the game to a 16-11 margin in favor of the Blazers. Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) broke the UAB run with a jumper, but the Blazers had the lead and a cushion to cruise into the second quarter up 21-17.
The Blazers opened the second quarter where they left off, drilling two more three-point field goals to take a 27-17 lead early into the frame. Southern Miss traded blows with UAB but was unable to break through until the four-minute mark in the quarter. Two more buckets from Jean sparked a quick 6-0 run for the Lady Eagles, cutting the UAB lead to two points. UAB called a timeout and was able score a layup on their next possession to lead 37-33 going into the second half.
Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) scored first out of the locker room to make it 37-35 and sank two free throws on the next possession to move within two once again. The Blazers used a 14-6 run in the heart of the quarter to hold onto their lead as the two teams headed into the final quarter with UAB leading 55-46.
UAB scored 32 fourth-quarter points to put the game out of reach and pick up their fifth win of the season. The Blazers shot 11-of-12 (91.7 percent) from the field in the quarter and made five three-pointers and five free throws.
Southern Miss scored 20 in the frame but was unable to overcome the Blazers' hot shooting attack. The Lady Eagles were able to reach the free throw line successfully in the frame, making 10 of their 16 shots at the stripe, but were unable to chip away at the UAB lead.
Jean led all scorers with 23 points while tying with Je'Mya Evans (Gulfport, Miss.) to lead the team with six rebounds. She was joined in double-figures by Sieper, who finished with 12 points. UAB was led by Maddie Walsh's 16 points as four Blazers finished with double-figure scoring efforts.

Celebrating 50 Seasons of Southern Miss Women's Basketball
The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season. Since then, the Lady Eagles have laid out five decades of excellence on and off the court. To celebrate this golden jubilee, Southern Miss women's basketball will host its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, January 18, against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum.
