HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Freshman Matthew Javier (Toronto, Ontario) fired a two-under 70 and sophomore Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) added a one-under 71 over the third and final round Monday to help Southern Miss place 12th in the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational in Saucier, Miss.
Javier, who enjoyed his team-low round for the week at the par-72, 7,487-yard Fallen Oak Golf Course, also notched the highest individual finish for the squad by tying for 21st place with a 219-stroke total over the 54-hole event. He also shot a 72 in the opening round to give him a team-best six rounds of par or below during the fall portion of the schedule.
Amornchaichan's final round helped him climb in the final standings as he placed tied for 54th with a 225.
Junior Will Burnham (Jackson, Miss.) earned the team's second highest finish after shooting a final-round 75 to give him a 223 total and a 41st-place tie. Senior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) posted a 76 over his final 18 holes to register a 228 total and a 63rd-place tie.
Tommy Latter, a sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario, rounded out the Golden Eagle team finishers by shooting a 81 to end is tournament with a 232 and a 70th-place tie. Redshirt freshman Matthew Downing (Oxford, Miss.) competed as an individual during the week and ended his event with a 76 for a 230-stroke total and a tie for 67th.
Ole Miss won the team competition by finishing with a seven-under 281 to end the event with an 844. The Rebels defeated both LSU and Illinois by nine strokes (853), with Georgia (861) and South Carolina (863) rounded out the top five.
The Golden Eagles shot a team round of 292 over their final 18 holes to end with an 890 and in 12th place.
Southern Miss completed the fall portion of its schedule with this even and returns to action at the Hall Williams Collegiate, Feb. 10-11, in Mobile, Ala.
