LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss (7-4, 0-1 Sun Belt) snapped a five-game Sun Belt win streak from last season against Marshall at Reed Green Coliseum. The Thundering Herd's frenetic pace of play and voluminous shooting efforts were too much for the Lady Eagles as Southern Miss fell 87-72, extending the team's skid to four-straight games.
ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers (6-8, 0-1 Sun Belt) fell in their Sun Belt Conference opener at Arkansas State last Saturday and are returning home for the first time in three weeks. Coastal Carolina is on a two-game skid of its own after falling to Michigan State in the final game of the Cherokee Invitational and then to A-State.
Though Coastal has played 14 games so far, tomorrow's game will be the team's fourth game on its home court. CCU is 2-1 at home this season with the only loss coming in overtime to in-state College of Charleston. The Chanticleers finished last season 11-3 at home and are 13-4 under second-year head coach Kevin Pederson in Conway.
Coastal's leading scorer is Deaja Richardson, who averages 15.9 in 12 games this season. Richardson has been in and out of the lineup but Mikaila Cange's debut season in Conway has been kind to her. The former DII All-American is averaging 12.3 in 14 games with 13 starts this season. Cange is also pacing the Chanticleers with 7.2 boards per game. Coastal Carolina plays an aggressive defensive style and is near tops in the Sun Belt by forcing 19.71 turnovers per game.
THE COASTAL CAROLINA SERIES
Southern Miss and Coastal Carolina have met just once before with the lone meeting coming last season in Reed Green Coliseum. Southern Miss prevailed 80-68 in a dramatic comeback affair.
The Lady Eagle with the most experience against CCU is Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.), who has played four games in her career against the Chanticleers in two seasons with Georgia State.
AFTER THIS
Southern Miss travels up the Eastern Seaboard for a Saturday, Jan. 6, meeting against old C-USA foe Old Dominion. The second meeting between the two as Sun Belt Conference members is set for a Noon CT (1 p.m. ET) tipoff.
