HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lady Eagle Basketball returns to action at Reed Green Coliseum tomorrow, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. against an old foe in South Alabama. The Jaguars and Lady Eagles meet for their 37th overall meeting and third meeting as members of the Sun Belt Conference.
Game 15 | Southern Miss (7-7, 0-4 Sun Belt) vs. South Alabama (7-9, 0-4 Sun Belt)
Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024 | 2:02 p.m. CT
TV: ESPN+ | Lee Roberts (PxP); Larry Boyd (Color)
Radio: Southern Miss Sports Network (92.7 FM) | Jason Baker (PxP); Kay James (Color)
Reed Green Coliseum (8,095) | Hattiesburg, Miss.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Eagles fell for the seventh-consecutive time, this time to conference unbeaten James Madison. Southern Miss (7-7, 0-4 Sun Belt) is still searching for its first Sun Belt win and came close on Thursday against JMU. Domonique Davis put up a season-best 33 points but it proved to not be enough as the Dukes pulled away late and escaped Reed Green Coliseum 81-76.
ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA
The Jaguars are also searching for their first conference win of the year and are in the middle of their own six-game skid. In fact, South Alabama has not won a conference road game since Jan. Jan. 13, 2022 – two years to the day by tomorrow – a span that includes 14 conference road contests.
South Alabama has already matched last year's win total as the squad finished 7-23 (5-13 Sun Belt). The Jaguars' turnaround has been led by first-year head coach Yolisha Jackson, who returns to Mobile after three seasons at USF. Jackson helped the Jaguars to two, 20-win seasons and WNIT appearances as an assistant under former head coach Terry Fowler.
THE SOUTH ALABAMA SERIES
Southern Miss and South Alabama have crossed paths 36 times before, first meeting in Hattiesburg on Jan. 15, 1976. Since then the two programs have met 35 more times, including 19 of the past 22 years.
Southern Miss holds a 23-13 advantage the series and is riding a four-game win streak dating back to 2019. In Hattiesburg, Southern Miss leads 14-4 and has not lost in Reed Green Coliseum to South Alabama since 2017.
AFTER THIS
Georgia State comes to town for Southern Miss' third-straight home game. Tipoff between the Panthers and Lady Eagles is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18.
Reed Green Coliseum will be host to four Sun Belt Conference basketball games next week beginning with the men's game on Wednesday, followed by the women's game on Thursday and capped off by a basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 20.
