MOBILE, Ala. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team used a tournament-low 287 team score during Monday's final round of the USA Intercollegiate to claim third place at Magnolia Grove. Junior Momoka Ando finished in fifth to lead all Golden Eagles.
"It's not a bad way to start the season," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "We started a bit slow with the first round, but the bounce back into round two, and then the finish today has set the tone for the rest of the semester. Plus, having the opportunity to see our entire team compete - outside of qualifiers at home - was a huge advantage and gives us a boost and better preparation for what comes next."
Ando fired a two-under 70 during the final round to move into fifth. She finished the tournament with nine birdies, good for sixth best in the field. Elena Melich and Taylor Trible both shot a 219 to finish in a tie for 13th. Trible used a one-under 71 on Monday to tie her best 54-hole score as a Golden Eagle. Freshman Ragini Navet enjoyed a 17th-place finish in her collegiate debut after firing a two-over 74 during her final round.
Sophomore Alma Betoret tied for 21st thanks to a one-over 73, her second of the tournament. She finished the tournament with eight birdies, four of which came today. Jacee Fields carded an even-par 72 today to finish with a 226. Fernanda Gorostiaga and Merche Corbacho finished 40th and 41st, respectively.
Southern Miss' 872 team score is tied for the best season-opening score in program history. Nunn Burke also fired an 872 at the USA Intercollegiate during her first season at the helm in 2018.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Sept. 25 at the Colonel Wollenberg Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. The two-day event is being held at Ptarmigan Country Club.
