NORFOLK, Va.-- The Southern Miss Soccer (5-5-1, 2-1-1 SBC) team suffered their first conference defeat against Old Dominion (8-1-2, 3-1-0 SBC) 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex.Â
In the first half, Old Dominion took the initiative, launching seven shots, but only two found their mark as Southern Miss struggled to maintain possession. The Golden Eagles managed just two shots later on, courtesy of Bernadett Stefan and Alice Williamson, both of which regrettably missed high and left.
The second half saw freshman Rebecca Vega attempting to break the scoring deadlock within the first few minutes, creating an opportunity for a center. However, an ODU defender thwarted her attempt.
Old Dominion quickly took control in the second half, scoring two goals within a span of two minutes. Rhea Kijowski converted a penalty kick, and Ece Turkoglu sent a high shot from just beyond center field, eluding Helbling's reach and extending ODU's lead to 2-0.
In the second half, Old Dominion outshot the Golden Eagles 15-1 and scored two more times as Turkoglu fired her brace with her right foot, finding the far lower left corner of the net in the 72nd minute before Megan Watts converted a penalty kick, securing the fourth and final goal of the afternoon for the Monarchs.
This matchup marked the first time in the program the Black and Gold had lost by a margin of 4-0 to the Monarchs, contrasting with their previous four encounter losses, all of which ended with a score of 1-0.
Next up: The Golden Eagles will host Georgia State at home Thursday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex for a 4 p.m. kick-off; the event will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
