HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss soccer team (5-5-1, 2-1-1 SBC) is set to host Georgia State (7-1-3, 3-0-0 SBC) in a 4 p.m. showdown at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex on Thursday.
Georgia State holds a 2-0-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. Both of their previous meetings took place at neutral sites, with the most recent encounter occurring in the first round of the 2022 SBC Conference Tournament, where the Golden Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Last time out: The Black and Gold faced their first conference loss this season against Old Dominion, losing 4-0 at the ODU Soccer Complex. The game remained scoreless in the first half, but Old Dominion took control in the second, netting two quick goals within two minutes. Rhea Kijowski converted a penalty kick, and Ece Turkoglu scored from long range, extending ODU's lead to 2-0. The Monarchs outshot the Golden Eagles 15-1 in the second and added two more goals, securing a 4-0 victory, marking the first time Southern Miss had lost by such a margin to the Monarchs.
Scouting Georgia State: The Panthers arrive in Hattiesburg with an impressive 7-1-3 overall record and a flawless 3-0 record in conference play. They secured a 1-0 victory over Texas State in their previous matchup. Georgia State's offense was highlighted by Maddie Johnston's clever back heel that set up Seika Ikezoe's goal, ultimately securing the win. In the second half, Georgia State dominated with ten shots compared to Texas State's six, showcasing their strong performance.
Freshman midfielder Aaliyah Faddoul leads Georgia State's offensive statistics with seven goals, 17 points, 34 shots, 20 shots on goal, and two game-winning goals. Senior keeper Jeddah Foos has made 14 saves between the sticks and secured four wins. Georgia State's strong start in conference play, going 3-0, is a notable achievement, the first of its kind since 2003.
The team's head coach, Ed Joyce, has been at the helm for eight years.Â
The matchup is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex, with live stats available here, and the event will be streamed on ESPN+.
