HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Soccer team (5-4-1, 2-0-1 SBC) is heading to Norfolk, Va., for an afternoon match Saturday against Old Dominion (7-1-2, 2-1-0 SBC) at the ODU Soccer Complex.
Old Dominion holds a 4-1-1 advantage in their all-time series, with their last meeting in the 2021 C-USA Championship Final resulting in a 1-0 win for Old Dominion.
Last time out: The Golden Eagles won 2-1 against Troy and Arkansas State, with two sophomores scoring their first career goals. They pulled off their third comeback victory of the season, overcoming a 1-0 deficit. Adaira Nakano leveled the score with a penalty kick, and Alice Williamson secured the win with an unassisted goal.
Scouting Old Dominion: Old Dominion enters the weekend with a 7-1-2 overall record, including a 2-1-0 conference play record. They suffered their first-season loss against Louisiana but bounced back with a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern.
ODU would take the swift lead in the second half as both teams were tied 0-0, exiting the first half. Riley Mullen emerged from a cluster of players with a breakaway opportunity, and she aimed for the upper left corner, scoring her first goal of the season at the 48:50 mark. Georgia Southern responded just over six minutes later when Elis Nemtsov located Smith Cathey in the penalty box, resulting in the equalizing goal at 55:15, bringing the score to 1-1. The Monarchs surged ahead 2-1 when Watts unleashed a powerful shot into the top center of the net in the 65th minute of play. Throughout the game, the Monarchs maintained a 13-11 edge in shots, and Emily Bredek made four saves to anchor the defense.
Old Dominion was predicted to finish third in the SBC Preseason Coaches Poll and won the tournament last season. Sophomore midfielder Thalia Morisi leads the team in both points and goals. Ashlynn Kulha is the lone Monarch to earn this season's Defensive Player of the Week accolade. 10th-year head coach Angie Hind leads Old Dominion.
