HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss Soccer team (5-4-1, 2-0-1 SBC) pulled off their third comeback victory of the season after trailing 1-0, securing a 2-1 win over Arkansas State (2-5-2, 0-2-1 SBC) on Sunday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The scoring began when the Red Wolves took the lead in the 11th minute of action as Aliyah Williamson netter her ball right up the middle with Riley Whisenhunt on the assist.
Within the following nine minutes, Adaira Nakano leveled the score to 1-1 by converting a penalty kick into the upper right corner of the goal. Both teams entered halftime tied-in shots.
The game experienced a weather delay due to lightning in the area. Still, when play resumed, sophomore forward Alice Williamson made an unassisted shot into the back left corner of the net during the final 20 minutes of the match for her first career goal, securing the victory for the Black and Gold.
Alex Helbling made six saves in the net, facing 13 shots, seven being on frame.
This win echoed a previous victory on Thursday when Lexy Griffin scored her first career goal, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 win against Troy. Alice Williamson repeated this feat today, contributing to the 2-1 victory against Arkansas State. This match marked the second time in the past three seasons that the Golden Eagles started conference play with a record of 2-0-1, just as they did in 2021.
Next up: The Southern Miss Soccer team will head to Norfolk, Va., to face the 2022 SBC Conference Champions, Old Dominion, on Saturday at noon. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
