HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior duo Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) paced the Golden Eagles to a ninth-place team showing after the opening day of the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio, Monday.
Latter shot rounds of 70 and 69, while Rattanayanon added scores of 74 and 67 for a tie of 7th (139) and 12th (141), respectively.
"We got off to a slow start this morning," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We made too many mistakes that put us behind early. But we righted the ship for the second half of round one. I am very proud of the way we bounced back and fired a good number in round two. Hats off to Robbie and Thongpipat for leading the way in round two. Their leadership has been instrumental for our team for years. Through just five rounds this season, their leadership is proving to be instrumental again."
After shooting a nine-over 293 in the opening round, the Golden Eagles completed the day's activities with a one-under 283 in the second round to put themselves in ninth at 575, just 18 strokes behind leader and host school Cincinnati (557).
Freshman Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) added rounds of 79 and 70 for a 149 and a 68th-place, while junior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) put together scores of 73 and 78 for a 151 and a 74-place tie. Senior Bennett Ruby two circuits of 76 for a 152 and a 77th-place tie.
"We have some work to do in round three," said Brescher. "Our team is focused on closing out this tournament on a good note and try to beat as many schools as possible. I preach it all the time to our guys…doesn't matter if you have a rough round, it matters where you finish after 54 holes."
The final round gets going Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. Fans can follow the live scoring here.
