HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior Thongpipat Rattanyanon (Bangkok, Thailand) birdied his last three holes to help Southern Miss finish in a three-way tie in regulation, before going on to take the tournament team title on a playoff hole over both Louisiana and UAB Tuesday afternoon at the Argent Financial Classic in Choudrant, La.
It was the second-straight year the Golden Eagles have won this tournament at the par-72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country Club.
All five Golden Eagles registered par on the playoff hole as Southern Miss won its sixth team tournament title under coach Eddie Brescher since the start of the 2018-19 campaign. The squad has won at least one event in each of the last three seasons.
"Beyond proud of our team, and the way they played this week," said Brescher. "This group is special, talented, and extremely hard-working. We got behind by a few shots in the middle to late part of the round, but our guys showed a ton of maturity grinding to the finish. It is extremely difficult to win in college golf, and to win this event in back-to-back years is something special.
"Words can't express how proud I am of our team and the strides our program continues to make."
Rattanayanon, who birdied five of his final eight holes, helped the Golden Eagles make up a two-stroke difference down the stretch to tie both Louisiana and UAB at a nine-under 855. Rattanayanon finished with a final-round, team-low score of 70 to finish tied for seventh in the individual competition. He completed 54 holes with a 211 total.
Houston finished fourth with a 857 and Middle Tennessee rounded out the top five team finishers with a 859.
Rattanyanon's teammate, senior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario), also finished tied for seventh as he shot a final round 71 for a 211 score as well. Freshman Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) ended his event tied for 12th after posting a final round of 75 and a 213 total.
Junior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a one-under 71 over his final 18 holes to up his final standing to a 44th-place tie with a 220 total, while redshirt freshman Walker Wise (Tupelo, Miss.) added his best round of 76 for a 234 total and 88th-place tie.
Golden Eagle junior Cameron Guidry (Picayune, Miss.) enjoyed his low tournament round of 74 to end with a 224 and a 63rd-place tie. Guidry was playing as an independent and his scores did not count towards the team total.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Bearcat Invitational which is set to take place Sept. 18-19.
