HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss men's golfers shot below par to improve the Golden Eagles standing to second place in the team scoring following the day two of the Argent Financial Classic being played at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La.
The par-72, 7,105-yard course saw Golden Eagle freshman Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) shoot a five-under 67, which included five birdies. Seniors Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added rounds of 69 and 70, respectively, as the trio sit in the Top 10 heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Hats off to our guys today," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "I am very proud of the way they stepped up, made a move, and put us in a position to close strong tomorrow. Anything can happen in college golf with a five, count four format. We love being in contention and look forward to the challenge tomorrow.
"Mic (Amornchaichan) continues to impress all of us with his play. He does not have many weaknesses in his game. From distance, ball striking, short game, putting, mental game - he excelled in every area. That is exactly why he is in this position in just his first college event."
Amornchaichan ranks fourth in the event with a 36-hole, six-under 138, while Latter is tied for seventh at 140. Rattanayanon sits just one stroke back of Latter at 141 in a 10th-place tie. Junior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a 74 for a five-over 149 for a 61st-place tie. Redshirt freshman Walker Wise added a 78 to hold a 158 and ranks No. 90.
Junior Cameron Guidry (Picayune, Miss.) added a second-round 74 to place tied for No. 66. Guidry is playing as an individual and not counting towards the team score.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot an eight-under 280 to hold a 568 over a pair of rounds. They trail Central Arkansas (563) by five strokes and lead host Louisiana Tech by one stroke with the final 18 holes set to take place Tuesday.
The final-round action begins at 7:30 a.m. Fans can follow the live scoring here.
