HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Seniors Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand), along with freshman Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand), each shot a first-round, one-under 71 to lead Southern Miss to a third-place tie after the opening day Sunday at the Argent Financial Classic in Choudrant, La
.
The event takes place at the par 72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country Club, with the final two rounds happening over the next two days. Junior Cameron Guidry (Picayune, Miss.), playing as an individual, collected a team-low 70 for a ninth-place tie.
The trio of Golden Eagles, which all are tied for 17th place after the opening round, helped the Golden Eagles shoot and even-par team score of 288, as they are tied with host Louisiana Tech. Central Arkansas opened things with a nine-under 279 and Louisiana is next with a one-under 287.
"Squire Creek is always a great test of golf," said Golden Eagle coach Eddie Brescher. "This year the course is not as firm off the tee as last year. However, the greens are firm and quick, which makes it tough to get approach shots close. Our guys didn't have their 'A' game today, but I saw a lot of fantastic patience and short game shots to save strokes for the team.
"No tournament is won after 18 holes. We have a ton of golf to play and are perfectly comfortable where we sit on the leaderboard. Round two is moving day. Round three is closing day. We hope to do just that."
Junior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) collected a three-over 75 for a 53rd-place tie, while redshirt freshman Walker Wise (Tupelo, Miss.) added an eight-over 80 to place tied for 85th.
The Golden Eagles tee off for round two Monday starting at 11 a.m.
