Freshman Rebecca Vega scores first goal of the 2023 season
BATON ROUGE, LA.-- The Southern Miss soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 SBC) recorded their first goal of the season against LSU (1-1-0, 0-0-0 SEC), but the game ended in a 4-1 decision Sunday evening.Â
In the opening half, Southern Miss attempted an early breakthrough as freshman midfielder Chloe Taylor launched a shot toward the bottom center, only for it to be thwarted by the Tiger keeper. LSU managed to break into the scoring column around four minutes later, with forward Mollie Baker capitalizing on a play from the far right, neatly slotting the ball into the back left corner of the net.
LSU extended their lead to two at the 20-minute mark, as Baker secured a brace by skillfully placing the ball past the keeper following a deflection off a Golden Eagle defender. Shortly after entering the field, transfer Golden Eagle Marissa House refused another Tiger tally when she showcased impressive speed, winning the footrace against an LSU defender. The Golden Eagles left the period with work to do in the second behind by two.Â
The scoring momentum continued into the second half, with midfielder Ida Hermannsdottir slotting the ball in just nine minutes into the period, with assists from Baker and midfielder Kelsey Major.
Southern Miss added the pressure in the second half, with Emilie Torres aiming to counterattack with a shot, which unfortunately missed its target. Nonetheless, the Golden Eagles managed to break through the Tiger's defense in the 64th minute, as freshman forward Rebecca Vega scored her first collegiate goal and the team's first goal of the season. The following five minutes witnessed Hermannsdottir securing the Tiger's second brace of the night, widening the LSU lead by three goals.
Fifth-year senior Alex Helbling, who accumulated two saves, was started between the posts. Towards the latter part of the second half, Maddie Ellis made her college debut, recording a single save. Together, the Golden Eagle keepers faced a total of 16 shots, with seven of those shots on target.
Looking ahead, the Golden Eagles are set to host Mississippi Valley State for their first home match of the 2023 season on Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. The match-up will feature live stats and streaming.Â
