HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the second consecutive year, Southern Miss plays host to an NCAA Super Regional this weekend starting Saturday, June 10, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field against Southeastern Conference foe Tennessee.
Â
Game time is set for 2 p.m., and can be seen via ESPNU as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. The remainder of the series has yet to be determined in terms of time and ESPN network.
Â
The Golden Eagles (45-18) enter the weekend having won 23 of their last 26 games, including a 4-1 mark last weekend to capture the NCAA Auburn Regional including an 11-7 victory over Penn in the final.
Â
The Volunteers (41-19) won all three games in the NCAA Clemson Regional last weekend. UT makes their third-straight Super Regional appearance and fifth overall this weekend.
Â
This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the Volunteers swept a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park during the 1992 season. The two teams also played three games in Knoxville the year before in which the Volunteers won all three games before Southern Miss swept UT in a pair of midweek contests during the 1986 season.
Â
A win in this super regional results in the second appearance in the College World Series for the Golden Eagles – the other coming in 2009 – as 14th-year Golden Eagle coach Scott Berry will retire following the completion of the season. UT has reached the CWS five times in its history.
Â
The Golden Eagle offense enjoyed a .302 team regional batting average that included 12 doubles, two triples and seven home runs at the Auburn Regional.
Â
Junior shortstop Dustin Dickerson led the way with a .364 average with four homers and 11 RBI en route to being named the regional's Most Outstanding Player. He was one of six Golden Eagles to record all-tournament honors including pitcher Tanner Hall, catcher Rodrigo Montenegro, second baseman Nick Monistere, third baseman Danny Lynch and right fielder Carson Paetow.
Â
Following the regional, the Golden Eagles now boasts four different players that have reached at least 50 RBI this season. Designated hitter Slade Wilks leads the way with 58, followed by Lynch with 53, center fielder Matthew Etzel with 51 and Dickerson with 50. It is the first time since 2009 that four Golden Eagles have total at least 50-plus RBI this season and the fourth-time overall. The other times were in 2003 and 2004.
