
Tanner Hall and Matthew Etzel Receive Invites to MLB Draft Combine

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Two Southern Miss baseball players received invites to the 2023 MLB Draft Combine. Junior RHP Tanner Hall and Junior OF Matthew Etzel will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. for the six-day event at Chase Field.
Two workouts will be available to the public via MLB Network. The first on Tuesday, June 20, from 12-3 p.m. CT and the second on Wednesday, June 21, from 2:30-5:30 p.m. CT. Broadcast workouts will include batting practice, infield/outfield and bullpen sessions, alongside prospect analysis and interviews.
Hall, the reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year, All-Sun Belt Conference First Team member and All-American, finished the season with a 12-4. The junior right-hander recorded two complete games and pitched a total 112.1 innings on the year, collected 124 strikeouts and just 33 walks. Hall, a native of Zachary, La., held his opposition to a .207 batting average over 406 at bats. His 2.48 ERA and 1.04 WHIP led all Golden Eagle starters as Southern Miss made an appearance in the NCAA Super Regional in back-to-back seasons.
Hall is slated as the 92nd overall prospect on the Top 200 MLB Draft prospects board from MLB.com.
Etzel, a native of League City, Texas, lead off for the Golden Eagles in all 66 games in 2023. The starting center fielder finished the year with a .979 fielding percentage and 135 putouts. At the plate, the junior earned a .317 batting average and .853 on-base percentage over the year, scoring 55 runs. His 51 RBI were third-most on the team and his nine sacrifice flies lead the team and the Sun Belt. Etzel tallied 90 hits in his debut season in the Black & Gold, collecting 134 total bases via 17 doubles, three triples and seven home runs.

While at the combine, players will meet with general managers, scouting directors and other team executives, as well as attend programs to educate them about their upcoming pro careers and social media branding.

The 2023 MLB Draft is slated for July 9-11 during MLB All-Star Week in Seattle, Wash. The Draft will feature 20 rounds across three days, beginning with the opening night of the Draft on Sunday, July 9, at Lumen Field in Seattle.Â

Rounds 1 and 2 will take place on Sunday, July 11, with Rounds 3-10 scheduled for Monday, July 12, and Rounds 11-20 slated for Tuesday, July 13.Â
