
Three Southern Miss Baseball Players Earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District®

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss baseball players, Matt Adams (Pearland, Texas), Carson Paetow (Vancleave, Miss.) and Slade Wilks (Columbia, Miss.) were all named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Baseball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom.
The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Adams, a right-handed pitcher, holds a 3-2 record this season over 11 starts with a 4.15 earned run average over 52 innings to go along with 20 walks and 59 strikeouts. He won the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors once after registering a career-high 11 strikeouts in a start over Dallas Baptist. Adams has thrown at least five innings in seven starts this season with five or more strikeouts seven times.
The Liberal Studies major, with a minor in General Science, holds a 4.00 grade point average and has been named to the President's List every semester of his collegiate career. Adams earned a C-USA Academic Medal three times and the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll three times.
Paetow, who starts in right field, has a .282 batting average this season with eight doubles, two triples, four home runs and 29 RBI and currently is enjoying a 10-game hitting streak. His conference hitting is at .322 and 22 of his RBI total has come against league foes. Last year, Paetow earned freshman All-America honors.
The Health Science major holds a .362 grade point average, with a minor in both Business Administration and Psychology, registered Dean's List honors four times and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll once. Paetow also merited one C-USA Academic Medal and named to Commissioner's
Honor Roll twice.
Wilks, the Golden Eagles designated hitter, leads the team in both home runs with 18 and RBI with 53. He won Sun Belt Player of the Week once and tied a school record with eight RBI in a game this season.
A 3.52 grade point average in Business Administration, Wilks earned President's List honors twice (4.0 GPA) and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll twice (3.0+). In addition, he received the C-USA Academic Medalist honors twice and was a part of the league Commissioner's List twice.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 7. The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages.
