Winning Streak Snapped in 10-1 Friday Night Loss to Louisiana on Scott Berry Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carson Roccaforte had two hits and drove in three runs to lead Louisiana to a 10-1 victory over nationally ranked Southern Miss Friday spoiling Scott Berry Night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (36-16 overall, 21-8 SBC) saw their nation's best winning streak end at 14 games as Southern Miss coach Scott Berry, who announced his retirement at the end of the season this week, and his family were honored prior to the game.
The game was delayed by 2 hours, 20 minutes and when it started the Ragin' Cajuns jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Max Marusak led off the game with a triple down the rightfield line off Golden Eagle starter Billy Oldham. A single by Kyle DeBarge drove home the game's first run. DeBarge was then caught stealing before Roccaforte homered to right centerfield for his fifth of the year.
UL starter Carson Fluno kept the Golden Ealges off balanced all evening, as the limited Southern Miss to a run on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. His only blemish was an eighth inning home run allowed to Matthew Etzel in the eighth.
Etzel, who also doubled to start the first, collected his seventh long ball of the season.
Fluno, who turned the game over to Cooper Rawls and retired all three batters in the ninth, got the victory to improve his record to 3-0.
The Cajuns (36-19, 18-11) added a solo run, along with a three-run sixth and a four-run seventh close out the scoring for the visitors. Marusak keyed the final scoring inning with a two-run homer for his ninth of the year.
Oldham suffered the loss as he fell to 6-3 after giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.
The Cajuns finished with 15 hits including three from Heath Hood and DeBarge, along with two each from Marusak, Roccaforte, John Taylor and CJ Willis.
The regular season concludes Saturday for the Golden Eagles as the two teams start at 1 p.m. The 2023 senior class will be honored prior to the game. The senior class includes Reece Ewing, Blake Johnson, Gabe Lacy, Danny Lynch, Rodrigo Montenegro, Christopher Sargent and Luke Trahan.
