NORFOLK, Va. – Southern Miss baseball plays an old foe in a new league, Old Dominion, when the two teams meet for the first of three Sun Belt Conference games starting Thursday at 3 p.m. CT (changed from 5 p.m. CT on the morning of the game due to expected rainy weather during the evening hours) at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Â
Due to the Easter Weekend, the series moved up a day with game two set for Friday at 5 p.m. CT, before ending the set Saturday afternoon at 12 noon CT. All three games can be seen on ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Â
The Golden Eagles (17-10 overall, 5-4 in the Sun Belt) have won two straight and play a Monarch squad (22-6, 7-2) that leads the league standings along with Coastal Carolina through the first three conference weekends. Both Southern Miss and ODU are in their inaugural season in the Sun Belt.
Â
In a series that dates back to 2015, the Golden Eagles lead the series with the Monarchs, 10-4. This will be only the second series Southern Miss has traveled to Norfolk having swept the Monarchs back during the 2018 campaign. The two schools played in Hattiesburg last season with ODU winning two of three contests. It was the meeting between the clubs since 2019.
Â
Golden Eagle designated hitter Slade Wilks continues to swing the bat well. After getting three hits in the team's last outing, a 10-6 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, Wilks has now hit safely in a career-best tying seven-straight games. He raised his average to .343 with team highs in home runs (10) and RBI (26).
Â
Dustin Dickerson also has hit in seven consecutive games to lead the Golden Eagles.
Â
For the first time in eight weekends during the season, Southern Miss announced a change in its rotation for the series. Junior right-hander Billy Oldham will now get the call in the series finale against ODU. Tanner Hall and Matt Adams are slated to throw the first two games of the set.
Â
Following the ODU series, the Golden Eagles complete a four-game road swing Tuesday at Alabama. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
