HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team travels less than two hours for its inaugural Sun Belt Conference championship appearance as the Golden Eagles will compete at Annandale Country Club over the next four days as they vie for the league title.
"We are excited to be playing our first Sun Belt Championship," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "And no better place for this event than a tour quality course like Annandale. It's no secret what our team needs to do to advance, simply put, we need to play well. We have put up a great season of results this year and we plan on keeping it going deeper into the postseason."
The 14-team field will play three rounds of 18 holes over the next three days at the par 72, 7,190 yard course. After 54 holes, an individual medalist will be honored while the top four teams advance to a match play event on Thursday. The match play will be slotted as the No. 1 and No. 4 will meet along with the No. 2 and No. 3 finishers form stroke play. The two winners of those two matches meet in the afternoon for the team championship and the automatic bid in the event.
"This conference is a deep men's golf," said Brescher. "Arguably, the toughest conference in the country to make the NCAAs. We never shy away from elite competition here at Southern Miss. So we look forward to a tough battle ahead this week."
Five schools rank in the Top 100 via GolfStat.com heading into the event, including No. 26 Georgia Southern, No. 68 Southern Miss, No. 72 Arkansas State, No. 77 Troy and No. 99 ULM.
The Golden Eagles get started at 8 a.m., Monday morning from the No. 1 tee as their scheduled times will come every nine minutes starting with Bennett Ruby, followed by Thongpipat Rattanayanon, Ryan Dupuy, Ryan Latter and Cameron Clarke.
Clarke leads the team in stroke average at 71.00, which ranks No. 3 in the league, followed by Dupuy at 71.37, which is tied for sixth among the league's leader, then Latter at 72.27 and Rattanayanon at 72.97.
The Golden Eagles also hold the second lowest team scoring rounds at 286.43, only behind Georgia Southern's 280.59.
