Men’s Golf Captures Grand Bear Match Play Championship

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team captured the 2023 Grand Bear Match Play championship Tuesday, defeating New Orleans in the opening match, before capturing the championship round against South Alabama at the Grand Bear Golf Club in Saucier, Miss.
Each match featured six individual matchups that featured a competitor from each school vying for one point per match. The Golden Eagles and Privateers tied 3-3 in the opening match, but the Golden Eagles won in the tiebreaker by winning more holes than the Privateers, 12-5. South Alabama defeated Louisiana 3.5-2.5 in the other opening morning match.
Southern Miss used convincing wins from Thongpipat Rattanayanon and Cameron Clarke against the Privateers. Rattanayanon defeated Pepe Concepcion 5 & 4, while Clark posted a 7 & 6 victory over Henry Augenstein which helped them in the tiebreaker scenario.
In the championship round, Southern Miss defeated South Alabama 4.5-1.5. The Golden Eagles got singles wins from Rattanayanon and Clarke as well as Ryan Dupuy and Tommy Latter. Clarke posted the big win at 4 & 2.
New Orleans went on to win the consolation match, defeating the Ragin' Cajuns 4-2.
Southern Miss returns to action when they play in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, slated for April 23-26 at Annandale Country Club in Madison.
