HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Shane Lewis hit a one-out, opposite field 10th-inning home run to lift Troy to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon over Southern Miss at Riddle-Pace Field to even the Sun Belt series.
The deciding game of the set will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (15-10 overall, 4-4 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after 2 ½ innings behind a solid start from Matt Adams.
With a 4-4 game in the 10th, Southern Miss drew a two-out walk by Creek Robertson, but a popout by Matthew Etzel to short ended the last offensive frame for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss ended the day leaving 12 runners on base, including at least one in eight of 10 innings.
Justin Storm, the third Golden Eagle pitcher, opened the final frame by getting a popout. He then got ahead of Lewis 0-2 before giving up a shot just inside the fair pole down the right field line over the 30-foot wall to end it for the Trojans (20-8, 4-4).
Slade Wilks gave Southern Miss the early advantage with a two-run homer in the opening frame. Wilks, who drove in Dustin Dickerson after his walk, belted one off the light tower in right field over the big wall. The blast was the team-leading ninth homer for Wilks.
Southern Miss added two more runs a couple of innings later in the third. After an out, Christopher Sargent reached on a fielding error, before both Reece Ewing and Rodrigo Montenegro walked. After a popout, Danny Lynch's ground ball up the middle was misplayed by the shortstop on the second base side of the bag and allowed by Sargent and Ewing to score.
The Golden Eagles, which drew 11 walks for the contest, managed just a fourth-inning single by Dickerson the rest of the game, finishing the contest with three hits.
Despite his solid outing, Adams gave up a leadoff homer to Brooks Bryan in the third, his second of the year and then allowed an inside the park homer to Kyle Mock, his sixth, that Etzel banged off the wall on his attempt to catch the ball.
Adams left the game up 4-2 after six innings, giving up both runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Southern Miss then went to Kros Sivley, who got three quick flyouts in the seventh. After a fourth flyout to open the eighth, Sivley gave up a single. He then posted a strikeout, before hitting a Troy batter. With two runners on, Lewis and Caleb Bartolero each followed with RBI singles to tie the game.
Sivley blew his first save opportunity in four tries and Storm suffered the loss to fall to 1-1, after allowing a run on a hit with a walk and two strikeout over the final 1 1/3.
Zach Fruit, the third Trojan pitcher of the game, threw the final four shutout innings and fanned seven, while walking four to earn the victory and improve to 4-1.
