HATTIESBURG, Miss.--Â The Southern Miss softball team (14-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) travels to Jackson, Miss., for a midweek doubleheader against in-state opponent Jackson State (9-10, 0-0 SWAC).
Last Time OutÂ
The Golden Eagles finished the weekend in Atlanta, Ga., for the I-75 Challenge against Kennesaw State, Georgia Tech, and Brown. They only dropped their match-up with Georgia Tech.
On Sunday against Brown, Natalie Taylor fired a leadoff homer to center field in the bottom of the second for her fourth of the year; the Bears were quick to respond when Meghan Gormley homered to left field with one on and two off to get ahead of the Golden Eagles 2-1 shortly after.
Brown maintained the lead, scoring again in the top of the fourth.Â
They thought they had secured the win before Maria Smith, Paris Ferguson, Hannah Borden, and Lorna Agren scored on fielding errors. Jana Lee closed out the scoring when she homered to left center at the bottom of the fifth inning.Â
Paige Kilgore (4-0) was relieved by Morgan Leinstock (7-2) in the top of the fourth and earned the victory. The Arizona native pitched the final innings, giving up no runs or walks while striking out six batters.
Scouting the OpponentÂ
- The Tigers enter the doubleheader with a 9-10 overall record under fifth-year head coach Kevin Montgomery.Â
- After competing in the Northwestern State Tournament this past weekend in Natchitoches, La, they take the field.Â
- Went 2-2 for the weekend, finding wins against UAPB and losses over contest hosts.Â
- JSU will have their match-up with Southern Miss before conference play Friday.Â
Series HistoryÂ
- Southern Miss leads the all-time series record 22-4, with matches dating back to 2005.
- These two teams met up last season on March 29 for a doubleheader where the Golden Eagles swept the Tigers 5-3 and then 11-0 for a run-rule victory.
