Softball Refuses Losing Skid

JACKSON, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (15-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) split a doubleheader against Jackson State (10-11, 0-0 SWAC) with a 6-5 loss in game one and a 9-3 win in game two Tuesday evening in Jackson, Miss.
The Golden Eagles' loss against the Tigers marked the first since 2015.
How it happened
Game One: Jackson State 6, Southern Miss 5
- After Hannah Borden's double to left center, she advanced to third on a passed ball; Lorna Agren reached first on a fielding error for Borden to start the Golden Eagles scoring in the top of the first.
- The Tigers came firing back when left fielder Mari Stephens singled to left field and found her way around the diamond with a fielding error and a wild pitch. Teammate Jace Jackson secured Stephens' ride home with her single to left field.
- In the bottom of the first, JSU waited to close the inning so Jackson could score after Isis Taylor singled to center field.
- The Tigers kept the momentum going with two outs on the board and sent a shot to center field for a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
- Designated player Jana Lee would reach second on a fielder's choice, and Agren advanced for Borden to score.
- Moments later, a sacrifice fly by Natalie Taylor drove Agren home to match the score 3-3.
- Left fielder Lorna Agren fired a shot to the JSU shortstop for Nealy McManus to run home and past the Tigers on the scoreboard 4-3; Carolin Worrell would then reach home shortly after in the top of the fifth.
- In the bottom of the following two innings, with the Tigers up to bat, they brought three runners home.
- Morgan Leinstock (7-3) took the loss after relieving Jana Lee in the bottom of the third. Despite the loss, the Arizona native struck out nine batters and only allowed four hits.
- Notably, center fielder Caroline Worrell and third baseman Nealy McManus went 3-2 at the plate.
Game Two: Southern Miss 9, Jackson State 3
- Jackson State started the scoring in the bottom of the first, and Southern Miss would respond in the top of the fourth when Natalie Taylor raced home on a wild pitch before Ferugson's single sent Worrell to the plate.
- The Tigers would put a few more on the board before Natalie Taylor homered to right center for a three-run shot in the top of the fifth.
- Hannah Borden fired a bomb to center field in the top of the sixth before the Golden Eagles could add three more insurance runs in the top of the next inning to conclude the scoring.
- Morgan Leinstock (8-4) recorded the win for game two after entering the circle for Paige Kilgore in the bottom of the fourth. Leinstock allowed zero runs and two walks and struck out five.
