Softball Closes Out I-75 Challenge With a 6-3 Win Over Brown

ATLANTA– The Southern Miss softball team (14-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) goes 2-1 for the weekend after a 6-3 win over first-time opponent Brown ( 2-7, 0-0 Ivy) to close out the last day of the I-75 Challenge at Bailey Park in Atlanta, Ga.—Sunday morning.
Natalie Taylor fired a leadoff homer to center field in the bottom of the second for her fourth of the year; the Bears were quick to respond when third baseman Meghan Gormley homered to left field with one on and two off in the top of the third to get ahead of the Golden Eagles 2-1.
Brown decided to maintain the lead when designated player Laurel Moody doubled to right center for runner Dara English to score in the top of the fourth.
The Black & Gold refused to take the loss when Hannah Borden reached on a fielding error and advanced to second while Maria Smith and Paris Ferguson scored. Moments later, Lorna Agren tripled for Bordon to score and scored on a fielding error. Designated player Jana Lee homered to left center to push and end the score at 6-3 before they could finish the bottom of the fifth inning.
Morgan Leinstock (7-2) recorded the win after relieving Paige Kilgore (4-0) in the top of the fourth. For the remaining innings, the Arizona native allowed zero ones and walks and struck out six batters.

Southern Miss will head to Jackson, Miss., for a Tuesday doubleheader against Jackson State. The first game is set for 3:00 p.m., and the next at 5:00 p.m.
