HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Baseball starts a stretch of playing 13 of the next 17 games away from Pete Taylor Park, Tuesday, when they take on in-state foe Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as be heard through one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Ticket information for the game can be accessed here. The Golden Eagles are the designated home team for this game.
Southern Miss enters the game with a 14-9 overall record after capturing its first-ever Sun Belt Conference series over the weekend, taking two of three games from Georgia Southern at home. All three games were decided by two runs or less and the Golden Eagles improved to 6-3 in games decided by one or two runs this season.
Ole Miss holds a 15-9 mark, after getting swept at home last weekend to Florida.
The two teams meet for the sixth time since the start of the 2022 season, with the Golden Eagles looking to snap a for-game losing streak to its in-state opponent. The last Southern Miss victory in the series came in last year's meeting at Trustmark Park in which Danny Lynch belted a three-run home run as part of a four-run eighth with the Golden Eagles rallying from a 7-6 deficit in a 10-7 victory over the Rebels. The Golden Eagles outhit Ole Miss, the designated home team, 14-6, in that contest. Entering Tuesday's game, Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry is 13-15 against the Rebels over his 14 years in leading the program.
In the teams earlier meeting this spring, Ole Miss belted three home runs to beat Southern Miss 11-5, March 7, at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, in the last meeting between the schools. The Rebels scored in six different innings to pull away in the contest.
Tonight's game marks the 37th appearance for the Golden Eagles at Trustmark Park with Southern Miss holding a 19-17 record there, including an 8-7 mark over the Rebels. Southern Miss participated in the 2011 and 2012 Conference USA Tournament at the facility and its first ever game there goes back to April 4, 2006, at the home of the Double A Atlanta Braves affiliate, the Mississippi Braves. Southern Miss defeated Ole Miss that day, 13-6.
Southern Miss will send junior right-handed pitcher Billy Oldham to the mound, who will be making his fourth start of the season. He is 2-1 on the season with a 5.00 ERA. He will be pitted against Ole Miss freshman right-hander Sam Tookoian, who is 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA, as he makes his first start of the year.
Following the Ole Miss contest, the Golden Eagles remain on the road as they travel to Troy this weekend for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. The set gets underway with a 6 p.m., contest Friday from Riddle-Pace Field.
