NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans got a pair of two-run home runs to defeat Southern Miss 6-3 Tuesday night at Maestri Field.
The loss suffered was the third in a row for the Golden Eagles (12-8), as they had a five-game winning streak snapped against the Privateers. UNO improved to 12-9.
The Golden Eagles scored the game's first run in the opening inning. After two were out, UNO starter Beau Blanchard walked Slade Wilks and then fanned Tate Parker in what was thought to be the end of the frame. The pitch, though, was in the dirt and the Privateer catcher threw down to first base. The throw was lost in the sun by the first baseman and allowed Parker to reach. After another walk to Reece Ewing to load the bases, Blanchard threw a wild pitch to allow Wilks to score.
The Privateers tied the game in the third with a solo run of their own. After a strikeout, Dylan Mach reached on a throwing error by Dustin Dickerson on a ground ball to short. With Mach at second, he then went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a ground out by Kasten Furr.
The Golden Eagles retook the lead on a wild pitch that plated Blake Johnson in the fourth, but UNO grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run home run by Anthony Herron, his second of the year.
UNO then added to its lead one frame later with three more runs. Furr knocked in the first run with a triple and then scored on a two-run homer from Tyler Bischke for his fourth round-tripper of the year.
Southern Miss got one back in the ninth on a RBI single from Dickerson, but Matthew Maldonado – the eighth UNO pitcher of the night – got Wilks to ground out to end the game.
Caleb Menina, the fourth Privateer pitcher, gave up just one hit in an inning stint in the fifth to get the victory and improve to 1-0.
Billy Oldham gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings suffered the loss and fell to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they play host to Georgia Southern in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
