HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss beach volleyball heads west for four matches in the Arizona Invitational. The Golden Eagles face a rematch against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and play Arizona Christian, No. 17 Arizona and (RV) Cal Poly for the first time this season.
Southern Miss opens play on Friday, March 17, beginning with a program-first matchup against Arizona Christian. The Firestorm sits at 7-5 on the year and has on common opponent in William Carey. The Sandy Birds won 3-2 over Carey while Southern Miss swept the crusaders.
Friday's play ends with another match against a ranked opponent as Southern Miss faces 7-2 and 17th-ranked Arizona. The host of the tournament is coming off a sweep of previously-ranked Pepperdine and San Francisco last week.
The Wildcats hold a 1-0 advantage over Southern Miss after taking last year's match 5-0.
Saturday, March 18's two matches open with a 10 a.m. MDT, 11 a.m. CDT, set against Cal Poly. The Mustangs and Golden Eagles have played a couple times before with Poly taking both matches. Poly enters the weekend with a 2-12 record but all 12 losses are to teams receiving votes in the AVCA Poll.
Saturday ends with a redemption match against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. Corpus sits at 9-4 and 5-0 in Southland play. The Islanders play two matches against No. 7 Grand Canyon and UC Davis on Thursday, March 16, before heading to Tucson for the weekend tourney.
Southern Miss fell 3-2 to the Islanders in their meeting earlier this year by a score of 3-2. Corpus used third set victories at the first and fifth pairings to grab the win in Boca Raton.
