HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (6-7) men's tennis team travels to Coastal Carolina on Thursday to open Sun Belt play in Conway, S.C. The Golden Eagles and Chanticleers (9-5) get underway at 12 p.m. CST at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
"Thursday is going to be a really big test for us," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "Not only is it a Sun Belt match, but Coastal Carolina is also a great team. They have nine wins as a team and three different players with at least seven wins. They've got experience and talent that we're going to have to try and beat."
Southern Miss is coming off back-to-back losses at New Orleans and Jacksonville State after enjoying a two-match winning streak. The Golden Eagles most recently fell 5-2 to Jacksonville State on Monday afternoon as they were headed out to Conway. Dakotah Bobo and Shamirul Shahril were the only two players to grab singles wins. Bobo's win was his fifth of the season, while Shahril moved to 4-6 on the year.
Olimjon Nabiev continues to lead Southern Miss with an 8-4 mark. Five of his eight wins have come on court three and the rest spread between court two and four. Five other Golden Eagles have picked up at least three wins on the season, while nine of the 10 Southern Miss players have wins.
Coastal Carolina enters Thursday's match as losers of three of its last four. The Chanticleers dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 14 Wake Forest on Sunday and beating SCAD the day prior. Ryuya Ata, Guilherme Toresan and Carlos Berna Ruiz lead Coastal Carolina with seven wins each. Maj Tomac has six wins to go along with five from Lucas Wayenburg. Coastal Carolina is a combined 43-30 in singles play. Its doubles teams are 20-12 with Tomac and Ata leading the pack at 5-2.
