Men's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker at Coastal Carolina in Conference Opener

CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina (10-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) picked up its 10th win of the season in a 5-2 win over the Southern Miss (6-8, 0-1 Sun Belt) men's tennis team on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Eagles dropped their third-straight match but saw Shamirul Shahril and Alan Sanson enjoy singles wins on the road.
"Coastal Carolina is a good team and I thought we played well enough to win," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We dropped three-set matches that could have swung the score to us and that was the difference. The good thing is we now have a week to prepare for South Alabama back in Hattiesburg."
The Chanticleers made quick work of Dakotah Bobo and Shahril on the top doubles court, winning 6-1. Guilherme Toresan and Ryuya Ata then knocked off Saheb Sodhi and Olimjon Nabiev to clinch the doubles point. Alexander Gima and Sanson were up on court two before going unfinished after Coastal Carolina's win on court three.
Trailing 4-0, Sanson picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ata on court four. It was Sanson's fifth win of the season and his first in nearly a month. Shahril came from behind on court two to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, against Lucas Wayenburg. It was the junior's second-straight win and fifth of the season.
Bobo and Sodhi both lost in three sets after nearly fighting back to pick up wins. Carlos Berna Ruiz beat Bobo, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 on court one. Sodhi won the first set on court five against Toreson before dropping the next two sets.
Southern Miss will travel back to Hattiesburg to host South Alabama on Saturday, March 25. First serve from the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is scheduled for 11 a.m.
