HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (6-5, 0-0 SBC) men's tennis team enjoyed a 4-2 win over Jackson State (3-7, 2-1 SWAC) on Thursday afternoon to pick up its second win of the season at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
"The guys responded well after losing the doubles point early in the match," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We switched up the lineup a little bit and I was happy to see them respond by getting the win. We've got two more tests this weekend on the road, so we'll need to rest and get ready."
Jackson State jumped to an early lead after taking two of the three matches to claim the doubles point. Trailing 1-0 going into singles play, the Golden Eagles got a quick point from Olimjon Nabiev on court two. The junior cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Raul Centeno to grab his eighth win of the season. Antoine Audrain extended his winning streak to four straight after picking up a win over Richy Gamo, 6-2, 6-3.
Alejandro Pimilla tied the match back up at two-all after beating Pawin Jirapoomdaje on court five. Shamirul Shahril and Saheb Sodhi would go on to pick up wins to secure Southern Miss' sixth win this season. Shahril cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set before dropping the second set. He then answered with a match-clinching 6-3 win. Sodhi took care of business on court three, winning 6-4, 7-5 against Jesus Gonzales. Pasawee Reansuwong went unfinished on court six while he was in the third set.
The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday, March 4, as they travel to New Orleans. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
