HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The nationally-ranked Southern Miss baseball team goes after its fourth-straight victory to start the 2023 season when they entertain New Orleans at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, Tuesday, at 6 p.m.
Ranked as high as No. 15 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, the Golden Eagles look to start 4-0 under Scott Berry for the fifth time in his 14-year tenure as head coach.
Southern Miss opened the year with a three-game sweep of 2022 NCAA Tournament team Liberty, outscoring the Flames 12-3 in the series. The Golden Eagles collected 10 extra-base hits during the weekend, while Liberty collected a lone one, coming on a home run in the final inning of the set.
Golden Eagle pitching gave up just two earned runs over the weekend and their 0.67 earned run average is tied for tops in the country after the opening weekend. Southern Miss also registered 37 strikeouts and walked just seven in the opening set.
Newcomer Matthew Etzel enjoyed his first action in Black and Gold by collecting three hits – including two doubles – and drove in three runs. Fellow newcomer Tate Parker hit safely in all three games, including a home run in the Sunday tilt.
Catcher Blake Johnson enjoyed a three-hit game in the opener with a home run and Dustin Dickerson collected two doubles and a triple over the weekend.
On the bases, Southern Miss stole five bases. They did not register their first theft of a base last season until game 13.
Southern Miss sends right-handed pitcher Billy Oldham for the midweek contest against the Privateers. Oldham is a transfer from Eastern Connecticut State, which won the NCAA Division III national championship last spring. Oldham got two outs in the final game of the Liberty series.
The Privateers come to Hattiesburg with a 1-2 record after playing in a three-game set at Kennesaw State over the weekend.
This will be the 112th meeting between the two schools in baseball with Southern Miss holding a 60-51 advantage in the series, including a current streak of four-straight wins. Southern Miss won 12-8 last season in New Orleans and captured a 10-5 decision in Hattiesburg.
Following the UNO contest, Southern Miss welcomes Illinois to town this weekend for a three-game set beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
