Lady Eagles Complete Historic Comeback Against ULM in a Tale of Two Halves
2/18/2023 6:33:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MONROE, La. – Southern Miss women's basketball makes history with a 21-point, 84-82 comeback victory over ULM. The Lady Eagles' comeback victory is tied for the 26th-best come-from-behind win in NCAA DI history.
"I think we were shell-shocked in the first half," said 19th-year Lady Eagle head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "It was not a pretty sight at all. I really and truly felt like the third quarter would be our quarter and that's what we said at the half to the team. We thought we could make that comeback and I knew if we could get within 10 to start the fourth quarter, we'd win this game. I never felt like we couldn't win."
Tale of the Tape
Southern Miss (18-9, 11-5 Sun Belt) stormed back from 21 down early in the third quarter as the lady Eagles did themselves no favors in the first half.
ULM (7-20, 3-13 Sun Belt) sent the Lady Eagles into a tailspin as they opened the game hot. The Warhawks scored the first four points before Domonique Davis scored her first two of the day. The DeRidder, La. native finished the first half with 15 points and played only four minutes in the third quarter.
Fired up by senior day festivities, ULM continued to pour it on through the first 10 minutes and led 25-13 at the first intermission.
The second quarter proved to be no better as ULM finished the first half up 50-31.
At the half, the Lady Eagles faced the daunting task of digging themselves out of a 19-point hole. Davis and Grayson had double-figures at the half with 15 and 10, respectively, but the rest of the team managed just six combined points.
Southern Miss posted a 23-point third, but ULM managed to close the quarter's margin with 17 of their own. With 10 minutes left to play, Southern Miss still trailed by 13 points.
Everything fell the Lady Eagles' way in the fourth quarter. Southern Miss outscored the Warhawks 18-5 to force overtime thanks to Femi Funeus' seven points and five rebounds. The Plantation, Fla. native delivered Southern Miss its first lead of the game with 1:44 left in regulation.
Lani Cornfield drilled two free throws to force overtime at 72-all. Cornfield scored five of the Lady Eagles' 12 in overtime.
In total, three Lady Eagles finished in double-figures, led by Melyia Grayson's 25 points. Funeus led the Lady Eagles in boards with eight.
Rose Warren enjoyed an unselfish day, recording eight assists with no turnovers.
