HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team ranked tied for sixth when play was suspended due to darkness, during the opening day, Monday, at the Hall Williams Collegiate in Mobile, Ala.
Being played at the par 71, 7,148-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course, the Golden Eagles registered an even-par 284 team scorein the opening round and found themselves four-under with only five team holes left to play to complete the second circuit when play was halted.
The Golden Eagles, who started the tournament ranked No. 49 nationally by GolfStat.com, held sixth place at four-under with Kent State. No. 5 Illinois ranked first at 21-under par, followed by Arkansas (-19), Oral Roberts (-10), VCU (-6) and No. 21 Kansas State (-5) in the 15-team event.
"This course and tournament are one our players are familiar with," said Southern Miss golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We have played at this course for several years. Today can be summed up as a solid team performance from our guys. We did not have anyone get hot and go low. However, we did not have anyone play bad. Our guys are beating over half the field and that usually equates to a solid team performance."
Graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) fired a minus-three over the first 17 holes of the second round to finish as top Golden Eagle of the day with a 21st-place tie at two-under par. Clarke began his day with a one-over 72.
Ryan Dupuy, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., was the only Golden Eagle to complete both rounds, shooting a one-over 143 to tie for 37th-place along with teammate junior Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario). Ruby collected an even-par 71 over his first round and was one-over with two holes left to play in the second.
Juniors Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) found themselves tied for 46th at two-over-par. Latter opened his tournament with a 76, before holding a three-under for the second circuit with one hole left. Rattanayanon enjoyed the best 18 holes for the Golden Eagles in the opening round with a 70 and put together a three-over with one hole left in the second.
"Tomorrow, the course will play a bit tougher with some of the pin locations," said Brescher. "But if we can get a few more putts to fall, we can make a move up the board and pick up some quality wins. Every win matters. Especially when it comes selection time in May."
The Golden Eagles return to action, Tuesday, at 8 a.m. Live scoring can be accessed by clicking here.
