Waynesville, N.C. – Southern Miss stands atop 15 Teams at the JT Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina by shooting four-under 276 capping off round two of the event. Western Carolina stands firmly in second, after being tied with the Golden Eagles on day one for second, etching a one-under 279 on the scorecard with Kennesaw State holding down third.
The Golden Eagles start the day slowly with three bogeys on hole one, a 360-yard par-4, with junior Benjamin Fernandez notching the only birdie. Fernandez later bogeyed hole three and hole seven but capped off the front nine with three total birdies. On the back nine, Fernandez picked up three more birdies on holes 13,14 and 15 while hitting for par on the other six holes, cementing him at a four-under 66 on the day and tied for seventh overall.
The one-under 69 performance from freshman Jake Moffitt puts him one stroke ahead of senior Will Burnham in their bid to propel the Golden Eagles to a first-place finish after round two. Burnham strikes again with his second eagle of the event coming from hole 18, a 565-yard par five, to set his card at pace with par.
Southern Miss leads the field with nine-under 551 through two rounds ranked second with 107 pars. Matthew Javier landed top four in pars with 25 trailing first place, Western Carolina's own Charlie Coe, by four.
