MADISON, Wis.-- Southern Miss men's golf wrapped up a hectic day, that had two lightning delays, in the lead of a field of 14 teams at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis. hosted by the University of Wisconsin with a 10-under 392, part way through the front nine.
The Golden Eagles started the day with Walker Wise opening round one at 8:15 a.m. where he birdied the first two holes. The first weather delay occurred just after Matthew Javier teed off at 9:06 a.m. with play resuming at 9:39 a.m. Wise finished the front nine two-over 38 where he picks up three more birdies on the back nine while also collecting a double bogey on hole 12, a par four and 423 yards, and two bogeys on 15 and 18 finishing the round three-over 75. With another lightning delay at 11:43 a.m. lasting until 12:47 p.m. where play resumed.
With an eagle on hole 16, a par four and 308 yards, Javier stamps a four-under 68 in round one picking up four birdies split evenly between the front and back nine to land himself tied for second with Southern Illinois' Anthony De Schutter. Javier started round two with two birdies and a double bogey notching an even-par 20 starting on hole six for day two. Benjamin Fernandez and Jake Moffitt conclude day one tied in fourth place with Fernandez collecting a three-under 69 with four birdies, three of which come from the back nine. Moffitt etches a one-under 71 round one finish with five birdies in addition to the three birdies he picked up in the first seven holes of round two leaving him at two-under 27.
Southern Miss ranked second in the tournament so far in birdies with 33 trailing Toledo by one thanks in part to Will Burnham and Grayson Davis who tally on 9 birdies between them, six coming from Burnham. Burnham calls it a day tied for 24th place going one-under 71 in round one and will kick off day two on hole nine of round two, two-over 34. Davis picked up a birdie on hole 3 followed by two bogeys on hole 6 and 8 closing out the front nine. He shoots for par on the first three holes of the back nine but draws two double bogeys on hole 13 and 15 closing it out with two birdies to finish round one three-over 75. Davis will resume in the morning at hole seven three-over 27.
The Golden Eagles will tee off at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday for the last round and a half. Follow the Golden Eagles on Instagram (@southernmissmg) for the latest information.
