LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss (7-3) finished the Homewood Suites Classic 0-2 after two tough losses to Cleveland State and Florida Gulf Coast, currently ranked 4th and 5th in the Mid-Major Polls. While winless on the trip, Southern Miss hardly played bad basketball, out-shooting both CSU and FGCU in each of their games.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) scored 46 points on the week, highlighted by a 30-point performance against FGCU.
SCOUTING MARSHALL
A familiar foe, the Thundering Herd (6-5) are led by a new face to Southern Miss. First-year Marshall head coach Kim Caldwell is in her eighth overall season as a head coach after winning the Division II national title at Glenville State (Glenville, W.Va.) and has reinvented Marshall's gameplan.
Caldwell's new-look Herd play a frenetic style of basketball, pressing their opponents the whole length of the floor and always looking for the quick basket. The group shoots the three-ball relentlessly and forces an average of 25.27 turnovers per game. However, the Herd commits 16.5 of their own giveaways each game as well. All of this has combined to give Marshall an 85.1 points per game mark—tops in the Sun Belt and 13th nationally. The Thundering Herd have hit the 70-point mark eight times, 80-point mark five times, 90-point mark four times and topped 100 three times with a season-best against 121 against Point Park (NAIA).
