Defense was the name of the game as Southern Miss (6-0) used a suffocating full-court press in the third quarter to come-from-behind against Samford. Southern Miss trailed the majority of the first half and was down two at the half, but a 19-3 third quarter followed by a 12-8 fourth gave the Lady Eagles an 18-point, 51-33 win over the Bulldogs.
The game also marked the final game of the 36th Annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) collected a 15-point, 14-board double-double, her first of the year to lead both teams in scoring and rebounding.
Samford's 33 points are the fewest allowed by Southern Miss in the Division I era, dating back to 1981-82.
KEY STORYLINES
Southern Miss is looking for its to extend its win streak to seven-straight—the best start to a season since 2003-04 and best under McNelis.
The Lady Eagles are looking for their first win over a ranked program since Feb. 27, 2000, when Southern Miss beat No. 18 Tulane 78-72. This is the first time Southern Miss has played a ranked team since Nov. 9, 2019, when No. 5/5 Mississippi State traveled to Reed Green Coliseum. Coach McNelis is winless in 15 tries against ranked teams at Southern Miss and is 10-43 overall against ranked teams. Southern Miss is 17-58 all-time against ranked teams.
McNelis also sits at 544 career wins, six away from 550 total. She would become the 61st Division I head coach to ever reach the mark and 27th active coach to do so.
SCOUTING OLE MISS
The Rebels (6-2, 0-0 SEC) enter the game after a loss to No. 22/19 Louisville in the ACC-SEC Challenge. Saturday also marks Ole Miss' first true road game of the year. The most-intimidating crowd the Rebels have played in front of this season came in the Battle4Atlantis in the Bahamas with a total of 284 fans.
Ole Miss plays outstanding defense, allowing just 55.8 points per game, ranking 54th in the country. Consequently, the Rebels' suffocating defensive subtracts from the team's offense as they score just 67.5 per game.
In their last game against Louisville, Ole Miss could not convert at the line, going 13-of-28, while allowing Louisville 36 attempts at the charity stripe of which they converted 25 in the 64-58 Cardinal win.
Ole Miss has allowed more than 65 points just once this year—an 80-70 loss to Oklahoma in the second game of the year.
