
Southern Miss Baseball Announces Additions to 2025 Season

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss first-year coach Christian Ostrander announced Wednesday the addition of 13 players for the 2025 season, including 3B/RHP Drey Barrett (Deatsville, Ala.), RHP Teague Broadhead (Fairhope, Ala.), C Coy Clements (Hattiesburg, Miss.), LHP Grayden Harris (Greenwell Springs, La.), RHP Caleb Hughes (Woodstock, Ga.), INF/RHP DJ Layton (Fort Mill, S.C.), INF Ty Long (Ripley, Miss.), RHP Logan Pratt (Grenada, Miss.), RHP Cole Richardson (Ellisville, Miss.), RHP/1B Chase Russell (Madison, Miss.), RHP Camden Sunstrom (Baton Rouge, La.), RHP Micah Wascom (Bogalusa, La.) and LHP Brooks Willoughby (Vicksburg, Miss.).
Barrett, at 6-foot-3, 190 lbs., plays at Holtville High School, which captured the Class 5A state title last spring. He was a first-team all-state selection as a junior and an honorable mention pick during his sophomore campaign, while also earning All-Metro honors the last two seasons. He also earned a spot in the 2023 AHSAA North-South All-Star game for rising seniors last summer.
The two-way player pitched the championship-clinching game and went 6-3 on the mound. He added a .381 batting average, five home runs and 43 RBI.
Broadhead, at 6-foot-2, 205 lbs., helped lead Bayside Academy to the Class 3A state semifinals last season. He also plays on the football team, where his overtime touchdown on a 12-yard run led his squad to a victory earlier this fall over St. Michael. A two-way player in football, he has 609 yards rushing this season with six touchdowns and 101 stops (62 solos) on defense, with two sacks and a pair of interceptions.
Clements, at 6-foot-3, 180 lbs., played his first season at Oak Grove High School last spring behind the plate, after transferring from Indiana and hitting .273 with 15 RBI his sophomore campaign. Clements helped the Warriors reach the first round of the state playoffs. He batted .333 for Oak Grove in his initial season with five homers and 17 RBI.
Harris, at 6-foot-1, 195 lbs., was a first team 4-5A all-district pick by Central Baseball at pitcher for Central High School as well as the Region 8 Pitcher of the Year by the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association on the strength of an 8-2 record. His accolades included being a Class 5A honorable mention all-state selection and a Morning Advocate all-Metro pick. Last spring, Harris threw a no-hitter against Zachary in the first round of his state playoff series.
Hughes, at 6-foot-1, 185 lbs., plays at Etowah High School where he was a Region 6 Class 6A first-team pitcher as well as honorable mention all-state. He also earned a spot on the East/West All-Star game last summer and was a member of the Atlanta 400 Metro all-star team. Earlier this fall, as part of the Future Stars Series Main Event, Hughes pitched at Fenway Park in Boston.
Latyon, at 5-foot-11, 160 lbs., currently plays at Charlotte Christian where he hit .307 last season with eight doubles, a homer and 16 to go along with 17 stolen bases. He also appeared in seven games on the mound and was 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA and had 14 strikeouts in eight innings of work. His team made the NCISAA state semifinals last spring. Layton also participated in the Future Stars Series Main Event that took place at Fenway Park earlier this fall.
Long, at 6-foot, 180 lbs., helped Ripley High School reach the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs in 2023 on his way to earning first-team All-State honors by the state's baseball coaches. He also earned the All-Tippah-Bent County Most Valuable Player honors on the strength of hitting .410 with seven doubles, three triples, five home runs, 22 RBI, 31 runs and 18 stolen bases to go along with a 1.342 OPS. In addition, he posted an 8-3 record with a 1.57 ERA that included 147 strikeouts and just 17 walks to go along with a 0.803 WHIP.
Pratt, at 6-foot-5, 180 lbs., enjoyed first-team MAIS Class 4A accolades at Kirk Academy this past spring in which he posted a 5-2 record with a 3.27 ERA. He fanned 90 and walked 40 over 57 innings of work. His team reached the North State title series before falling to Oak Hill Academy.
Richardson, at 6-foot-5, 180 lbs., earned a first-team Class 5A all-state nod at South Jones High School last spring. His team reached the second round of the state playoffs as he plays for former Golden Eagle pitcher Mason Strickland.
Russell, at 6-foot-2, 200 lbs., collected Region 4-6A honors to go along with a Class 6A first-team accolade at Madison Central High School. The Jaguars reached the second round of the state playoffs last spring. Earlier this fall, he was named the High School Fall Wood Bat League Jackson Division MVP for P360 Performance Sports.
Sunstrom, at 6-foot-1, 200 lbs., earned Class 3A first-team and Region 8 all-state honors by the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association for University High School after posting a 7-1 record. The squad reached the quarterfinal round of the Division III Select state championship bracket. In one game last spring, he hurled a 12-strikeout, one-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Doyle.
Wascom, at 6-foot, 185 lbs., earned Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association All-State team honors for Franklinton High School on the strength of hitting .431 with three homers and 20 RBI to go along with 30 runs scored. He also collected a Region 10 nod, while earning co-MVP honors in District 9-4A following his sophomore season and first-team all-state honors in which he posted an 8-1 record with a 1.11 ERA. He posted 94 strikeouts and 23 walks over 57 innings.
Willoughby, at 6-foot-6, 175 lbs., registered a 2-1 record last spring at Warren Central High School with 49 strikeouts over 29 1/3 innings and a 1.19 ERA. He was named a member of the Vicksburg Post All-County team. One of his best games last season came against Northwest Rankin in the Region 6-6A opener in which he fanned 13 over five innings in a 6-1 victory to open region play.
