LAFAYETTE, La.-- On Sunday afternoon, The Southern Miss Soccer team (6-6-1, 3-2-1 SBC) suffered a 2-1 defeat against Louisiana (5-6-2, 2-4-0 SBC) at the Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex. This victory for Louisiana evened the all-time series record at 4-4-1.
During the first half, Southern Miss dominated possession, but after Louisiana earned their second corner kick, Emma Bates delivered a precise shot that midfielder Hailly Waterhouse struck with her right foot, securing the opening goal of the match 17 minutes in.
Midfielder Emilie Torres equalized the score for Southern Miss in the 28th minute with a skillful shot from outside the box, finding the left side of the net past the Louisiana goalkeeper, marking her first goal of the season. Louisiana regained the lead when senior midfielder Alyssa Abbott scored their second goal with an assist from Brynn Dunbar four minutes later.Â
Despite trailing by one goal at halftime, the Black and Gold led in shots, tallying nine compared to the Ragin' Cajuns' five, with five of those shots on target.
Both teams put up a tremendous defensive effort as no shots were made until 20 minutes into the second period from fifth-year Torres, that was fired out top.Â
Between the sticks, Alex Helbling recorded two saves facing six shots. The Golden Eagles tallied 15 shots and six on frame despite their loss.Â
Next up: The Golden Eagles are set to host Georgia Southern at home on Oct. 19. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
