HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss soccer team (6-7-1, 3-3-1 SBC) suffered a 2-1 defeat to Georgia Southern (9-5-0, 4-3-0 SBC) on a Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex for Eagles to maintain their all-time series lead.
Georgia Southern's midfielder Smith Cathey made an early impact by scoring within the first nine minutes of the match. She skillfully received a cross from defender Erin Wilkins on the right side and found the back of the net.
Emilie Torres attempted a long-range shot in the 34th minute but sent the ball over the crossbar. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles had limited opportunities in the first half as the Eagles outshot them 14-3.
Southern Miss managed to level the score less than two minutes into the second half. Junior Adaira Nakano delivered a precise pass that found freshman Abby Badurak on the left side of the box. Badurak's shot struck the far post and went in, equalizing the match with her second goal of the year.
In the 86th minute, Georgia Southern's Sade Heinrichs helped mark the first second-half goal that Southern Miss conceded at home this season when she initiated a play from just shy of midfield and dribbled into the Southern Miss half. Her pass to Bri Conley was then crossed to Simone Timm, who had a straightforward finish.
The Eagles concluded the game with a 20-10 advantage in total shots. Alex Helbling made four saves before exiting the game.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles are on the road to Boone, N.C., for a 5 p.m. match-up against App State on Oct. 19.
