HATTIESBURG, Miss.--The Southern Miss soccer team, with a record of 6-6-1 (3-2-1 SBC), is gearing up to host Georgia Southern, who has an 8-5-0 (3-3-0 SBC) record, in a noon showdown at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex Sunday.
Georgia Southern holds the historical advantage, leading the series 1-0-0, with their previous meeting taking place in 1997 in Statesboro, Georgia, resulting in a 3-0 win for the Eagles.
Last time out: Louisiana secured their second corner kick of the afternoon, and it was Emma Bates who sent a precise shot into the box. Hailly Waterhouse, the midfielder, connected with her right foot to find the back of the net, opening the scoring for the match 17 minutes into the game. In the 28th minute, midfielder Emilie Torres skillfully equalized the score for Southern Miss with a well-placed shot from beyond the box, finding the left side of the net, which marked her first goal of the season. Just four minutes later, Louisiana regained the lead as senior midfielder Alyssa Abbott netted their second goal with an assist from Brynn Dunbar. Although they were trailing by one goal at halftime, the Black and Gold had the upper hand in shots, with nine attempts compared to the Ragin' Cajuns' five, and five of those shots were on target. Unfortunately, the Black and Gold were unable to gain the upper hand and ended with a deficit of 2-1. In the face of a total of six shots, Alex Helbling made two saves in goal. Despite losing, the Golden Eagles managed 15 shots, with six of them finding their target.
Scouting Georgia Southern: Georgia Southern is coming off a 2-1 victory over Georgia State, evening their conference record to 3-3 and their overall record to 8-5. Forward Simone Timm scored early in the eighth minute, and the Eagles maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime. They doubled their lead with a penalty kick converted by midfielder Smith Cathey in the 84th minute, but Georgia State quickly answered with a goal by Alondra Nieves two minutes after. The Eagles controlled the final four and a half minutes to deny Georgia State another opportunity to score and secure the victory.
In the game, there were 15 shots from each team, and both goalies made three saves. Georgia Southern is under the direction of fourth year head coach Chris Adams.
Kick off is slated for noon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex and this match will be a Pink Out Game.
