HATTIESBURG, Miss. –The Southern Miss Soccer team (6-8-2, 3-4-2 SBC) is gearing up for their upcoming away match in San Marcos, Texas, marking their final regular season encounter against Texas State (8-6-3, 3-3-3 SBC) at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The all-time series records show that Texas State holds a 1-0-1 edge in this series, with their most recent meeting occurring last year, where the Bobcats managed to secure a 1-0 victory at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Last time out: Southern Miss Soccer wrapped up their home season with a 2-2 draw against ULM, marking their second season tie.
Chloe Taylor put the Golden Eagles on the board first when she scored an impressive unassisted goal in the 18th minute. Taylor executed a remarkable solo run from midfield, launching a skillful shot from just beyond five yards outside the box, eluding the goalkeeper's reach and nestling into the back of the net. Shortly before the halftime whistle, Adaira Nakano added another goal for the Black and Gold, using her left foot to place the ball into the back of the net with an assist from Abby Badurak. This gave the Black and Gold the lead at halftime for the first time in conference play, making it the first instance where ULM trailed in a conference match. However, the Warhawks wasted no time in retaliating. Three minutes into the second half, Emelie Kobler found the back of the net after Inge Konst craftily maneuvered Alex Helbling out of position, creating the perfect opportunity for the successful shot. With just 15 minutes remaining in the game, Lena Goppel scored an unassisted goal for ULM, leveling the score at 2-2. Despite both teams' best efforts, the deadlock couldn't be broken, resulting in the final draw. ULM outshot the Golden Eagles 12-6, and Alex Helbling made four saves to the Warhawks' one.
Scouting Texas State: The Bobcats enter this Thursday's match following a 4-0 defeat to South Alabama. Offensively, the Bobcats were restricted to four shots, with just two on target. Zoe Junior took both on-target shots in the second half, and Olivia Wright attempted two shots during the game. Bobcat keeper Caitlyn Draper recorded three saves in this match, bringing her season total to 51 stops.
USA took the lead at the end of the 14th minute when Amber Fortenberry's corner kick found the net. Wright had an opportunity to level the match in the 25th minute when she outmaneuvered a defender and attempted a left-footed shot, but it narrowly missed the left post. The Jaguars doubled their lead just over four minutes before halftime when Gabby Hollar converted a penalty kick.
During the second half, the lead for South extended to three when Irene Campo scored off a short pass from Gabby Hollar early in the 69th minute. A little over four minutes later, Gracie Wilson netted the match's final goal by putting back a rebounded shot attempt by Hollar.
The Bobcats have clinched their spot in the SBC Tournament and are under the direction of second-year head coach Steve Holeman.
Kickoff for the upcoming match is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex, and the event will be available for live streaming on ESPN+.
