HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss Soccer team (6-8-1, 3-4-1 SBC) is preparing for their final home game of the season at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex this Sunday, as they host ULM (9-2-5, 4-1-3 SBC) at 1 p.m.
In their head-to-head history, Southern Miss holds a 6-3-0 advantage over ULM, with the most recent encounter resulting in a 4-1 loss in Monroe last season. Notably, the Golden Eagles have never allowed the Warhawks to secure a victory on their home turf.
Last time out: The Southern Miss Soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of App State on Thursday night. The match's lone goal occurred just two minutes into the first half, with Izzi Wood executing a skillful maneuver past the Southern Miss defense, luring goalkeeper Alex Helbling to the far right corner of the net. Wood then delivered a precise cross to Olivia Simon, who capitalized on the opportunity to give App State an early lead. Despite a 9-6 advantage in shots for the Golden Eagles, they were trailing 1-0 at halftime.
The second half saw Southern Miss striving to regain control and momentum. Still, App State's defenders exhibited a resilient defense, thwarting the Golden Eagles' attempts to generate scoring opportunities or maintain possession. Adaira Nakano was the lone Black and Gold player to test the App State goalkeeper in the second half with an on-target shot from outside the box. However, both Brooke Amos and Tay Collum made their attempts shortly after but could not find the mark.
As the match neared its conclusion, Southern Miss increased their intensity in a bid to equalize. Nakano attempted to slide the ball from the left corner of the box to Abby Badurak on two occasions, but the App State backline held strong, blocking both attempts. In the dying moments, Rebecca Vega had a chance to level the score, but her shot veered wide to the left. The final shot count for both teams stood at 13, and Alex Helbling made six crucial saves during the match.
Scouting ULM: The Warhawks head into Sunday's matchup fresh off a 3-0 victory over Troy at Brown Stadium. First-half goals by Mara Grutkamp, Eve Blakey, and Emelie Kobler secured the win, with Mickaela Leal posting a shutout in goal. ULM outshot Troy 21-4, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
ULM is under the leadership of first-year head coach Will Roberts, with midfielder Inge Konst leading in points (20), goals (8), and game-winning goals (3), while Grutkamp is the top performer in assists (6), shots (59), and shots on goal (27).
The match is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. and will be available for streaming on ESPN+. Senior Day celebrations will take place after the game.
