BOONE, N.C.-- The Southern Miss Soccer team (6-8-1, 3-4-1 SBC) experienced their second 1-0 defeat at the hands of App State (7-5-3, 4-2-2 SBC) on a Thursday night match hosted at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
The game's only goal was scored just two minutes into the first half, as Izzi Wood skillfully maneuvered past the Southern Miss defense, drawing the goalkeeper Alex Helbling to the far right corner of the net. From there, Wood delivered a precise cross to Olivia Simon, who capitalized on the opportunity to give App State an early lead. Despite the Golden Eagles having a 9-6 advantage in shots taken, they found themselves trailing 1-0 at halftime.
As the teams entered the second half, Southern Miss attempted to regain momentum and take control of the game. However, App State's defenders put up a resilient defense, making it difficult for the Golden Eagles to generate scoring opportunities or maintain possession of the ball. Adaira Nakano was the lone player from the Black and Gold to test the App State goalkeeper in the second with an on-target shot from outside the box. Both Brooke Amos and Tay Collum made their attempts shortly after but failed to find the mark.Â
The game's intensity heightened in the final minutes of the night, with Southern Miss pushing hard to equalize. Nakano tried twice to slide the ball from the left corner of the box to Abby Badurak, but the App State backline held strong, blocking both attempts and preventing any late-game heroics. In the match's dying moments, Rebecca Vega had a chance to level the score, but her shot veered wide to the left.
Overall, both teams managed to create 13 shots each, with Alex Helbling coming up with six crucial saves during the course of the match.
Next up: Southern Miss is set to return home for their final home game of the season on Sunday against ULM, which will also be Senior Day. Kickoff against is slated for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
