HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss soccer team (6-7-1, 3-3-1 SBC) will play their second-to-last road regular season game against App State (6-5-3, 3-2-2 SBC) at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Boone, N.C.
App State holds the upper hand in the historical head-to-head series, with their sole victory occurring last season in Hattiesburg.
Last time out: Georgia Southern's midfielder Smith Cathey had an early impact, scoring within the game's first nine minutes. She skillfully received a pass from defender Erin Wilkins on the right flank and found the back of the net. Unfortunately, Southern Miss had limited opportunities in the first half as they were outshot by the Eagles, 14-3. Southern Miss managed to level the score less than two minutes into the second half. Junior Adaira Nakano delivered a precise pass that found freshman Abby Badurak on the left side of the penalty box. Badurak's shot struck the far post and went in, equalizing the match with her second goal of the year. In the 86th minute, Georgia Southern's Sade Heinrichs helped mark the first second-half goal that the Black and Gold conceded at home this season when she initiated a play from just shy of midfield and dribbled into the Southern Miss half. Her pass to Bri Conley was then crossed to Simone Timm, who had a straightforward finish. The Eagles concluded the game with a 20-10 advantage in total shots. Alex Helbling made four saves before being substituted by Maddie Ellis.
Scouting the opponent: App State heads into Thursday's matchup following a 1-0 loss to Old Dominion. The match's lone goal came in the 55th minute when Megan Watts capitalized on a rebound near the top of the 18-yard box. Despite trailing 1-0 in the 83rd minute, Stephanie Barbosa had a chance that hit the far post. On the ensuing possession, Olivia Simon's shot was deflected over the net by Monarchs goalkeeper Emily Bredek, preserving the lead. At the end of the 90 minutes, both teams ended with 11 shots each, while App State had eight shots on target compared to six for the Monarchs. This was the only setback for keeper Kerry Eagleston, who was credited with five saves, bringing her career total to 395 in her Mountaineer career.
App State is currently under the guidance of second-year head coach Aimee Haywood. Forward Izzi Wood leads the Mountaineers in five offensive categories: points (14), goals (6), shots (62), shots on goal (26), and game-winning goals (4).
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex, and the event will be available for streaming on ESPN+. Fans can stay updated by following @SouthernMissSoc on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
