HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss completes its four-game road swing with a Saturday tip against Texas State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Texas State's Strahan Arena at the University Events Center.
Last Time Out
Southern Miss moved to 14-6 overall and 7-2 in Sun Belt Conference play after a second half comeback for the ages. The Lady Eagles completed a 68-59, come-from-behind victory over Arkansas State after being down by as many as 12 points in the third quarter.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La. // LSU) tallied her second career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss. // Hattiesburg HS) and Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss. // Ole Miss) each finished with double-figure scoring and nine boards each.
The Texas State Series
The Lady Eagles have never faced Texas State in the program's history, although the two teams share a unique history. Joye Lee-McNelis began her coaching career at Texas State (then Southwest Texas State) in 1984 after graduating from Southern Miss.
In her two seasons in Strahan Arena, McNelis complied a 26-30 record for the Bobcats, coaching under her husband Dennis McNelis.
Southern Miss is no stranger to Texas programs, however. The Lady Eagles are 71-73 against teams from the Lone Star State and 49-55 in conference play against them. Southern Miss has played conference games against seven Texas teams: Houston (9-13), North Texas (5-7), Rice (9-10), SMU (3-5), TCU (0-4), UTEP (9-15), UTSA (14-1).
The Lady Eagles are 21-40 inside the state of Texas against the state's own teams.
Scouting Texas State
The Bobcats enter the weekend sitting at 6-3 in conference and at fourth place overall. Texas State also shares a 14-6 record with Southern Miss.
TSU welcomes back its leading scoring average player, Da'Nasia Hood, who averages 15.5 points per game. Hood has missed the past three games and only seeing action in 12 contests this year.
In her absence, Tianna Eaton and Kennedy Taylor have picked up the slack, averaging 10.6 and 10.4 points per game, respectively.
Eaton and Hood split rebounding duties, with Eaton pulling down 95 and Hood 90.
The Bobcats boast one of the best scoring defenses in the country, holding opponents to 56.5 points per game, the 31st-best mark in the nation.
