HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team will open its 2023 slate in Fort Myers, Fla. against Florida Gulf Coast and Bucknell. The Golden Eagles will take on FGCU on Friday at 4 p.m. and then Bucknell on Sunday at 12 p.m.
"We are looking forward to heading down to Florida to start the season," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We had a great Fall to prepare us, and we have a lot of veterans back to help us to a strong start. Florida Gulf Coast and Bucknell are great programs, so we'll need to bring our best this weekend."
Southern Miss is coming off a 9-10 season where it won five of its last seven matches before losing in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament to No. 2 FAU. Head coach Zubin Engineer returns Antoine Audrain, Alexander Gima, Pawin Jirapoomdaje, Olimjon Nabiev, Pasawee Reansuwong, Alan Sanson and Shamirul Shahril. Newcomers Dakotah Bobo, Taras Ignatiuk and Saheb Sodhi.
Nabiev and Shahril led the Golden Eagles in wins with nine each. Each saw time at No. 1 singles while former Golden Eagle Dhruv Sunish held down the top spot for much of the season. Audrain finished with seven wins, while the remaining returns combined for eight wins.
